Young MIAS Member Spotlight: Fernando G. Oyarzun!
This month, we’re excited to feature Fernando G. Oyarzun, an Associate in the Miami office of Shutts & Bowen and a member of the firm’s International Litigation and Arbitration Practice Group. A Miami native and ardent fan, Fernando holds a J.D. from St. Thomas University School of Law. His practice focuses on representing international and domestic clients in complex litigation, arbitration, and business transactions.
Fernando has represented foreign companies across a range of industries, from the international trade of precious metals to the export of wine and spirits products across the Atlantic. He frequently represents clients in disputes under agreements that designate Miami as the seat of arbitration, reflecting the city’s growing stature as a global hub for international arbitration.
In addition to maintaining a vibrant practice, Fernando is actively involved in the arbitration community. As a young practitioner, he joined Young MIAS and quickly hosted an event aimed at teaching young practitioners and newcomers about valuable tools such as Section 1782. His efforts reflect a commitment to fostering knowledge, sharing and supporting Miami’s growing role as a center for international dispute resolution.
Outside of work, Fernando is an avid golfer. Fernando is passionate about the game whether his swing is in peak form or not, and enjoys the mix of the challenge, camaraderie, and the fresh air it brings.

Fun facts about Fernando:
Favorite Artist:
Fernando’s playlists reflect a wide range of tastes, spanning from hip hop to rock legends such as Rush and Metallica. His Latin roots, however, always bring Bad Bunny and Juan Luis Guerra into the mix, creating a soundtrack that’s as diverse as his Shutts’ practice group, with members from Estonia to Mexico.
Favorite Restaurant in Miami:
Fernando’s go-to spot is Islas Canarias, because it reminds him of the home-cooked Cuban meals his grandmother and mother make, meals he insists are better than anything you’ll find at any Cuban restaurant. He also treasures the home-cooked dishes prepared by his wife, Angie, which he ranks right alongside his family’s best. For something different, he loves Daily Bread in Pinecrest, a Mediterranean cafeteria that, in his words, “just gets it right” every time (the Gyro and Baklava are a must).

Favorite Thing About Practicing International Dispute Resolution in Miami:
For Fernando, it’s all about the people he meets and the mix of cultures that make every case unique. The work spans a broad range of laws and jurisdictions, pushing him to constantly research, learn, and grow as a practitioner. It has even sharpened his Spanish and created connections across the globe, from Ecuador to his favorite city in the world, Barcelona, Spain.

Favorite Book:
Fernando’s favorite reads include Win the Day by Mark Batterson, which he values for the way it puts life into perspective and motivates him to approach challenges, and each day with a new purpose. He also enjoys Greenlights by Matthew McConaughey, a book he finds both motivational and effortlessly cool, with its reminder to live fully in the present.
