Young MIAS Member Spotlight: Thayane Machin Martinez!

This month, we’re excited to feature Thayane Machin Martinez, an Associate in the Miami office of Reed Smith and a member of the firm’s Global Commercial Disputes Group. Born and raised in Brazil, Thayane completed her undergraduate studies in law at the Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Paraná, and thereafter obtained a J.D. and an LLM in International Arbitration from the University of Miami School of Law. Her practice focuses on international disputes, with an emphasis on cross-border commercial disputes, as well as international commercial and investment arbitration.

With a background spanning both civil law and common law systems, Thayane is admitted to practice in Brazil and Florida. Her dual legal training enables her to represent clients effectively in matters involving Brazil and other jurisdictions, offering a nuanced approach to complex international disputes. Fluent in Portuguese, Spanish, and English, Thayane’s language skills are a natural complement to Miami’s multicultural legal landscape, allowing her to communicate seamlessly with clients across the Americas. Her deep understanding of diverse legal and cultural perspectives allows her to anticipate challenges and craft strategies that align with different jurisdictions, providing clients with a distinct advantage in navigating cross-border disputes. Thayane has experience in complex litigation before state and federal courts, as well as in applications for section 1782. She regularly advises clients on U.S. discovery for use in foreign proceedings.

In addition to having a vibrant practice, Thayane is deeply engaged in the arbitration community. Indeed, she serves on the Leadership Team of Young MIAS as Academic Liaison, where she contributes to fostering engagement between practitioners, young professionals, and students, bridging the gap between academia and practice.

Outside of work, Thayane enjoys traveling, exploring a new city, discovering a cozy restaurant, or simply enjoying good company and meaningful conversations.

Fun facts about Thayane:

Favorite Artist:
Fernanda Montenegro is a legend, the first Brazilian actress ever nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress! She has shaped Brazilian culture with her incredible talent and unforgettable performances.

Central Station, (Central do Brasil) , 1998

Favorite Restaurant in Miami:
Call Me Gaby is charming Italian restaurant in South of Fifth Miami Beach. The secret? Sitting outside under the bougainvilleas — and don’t get me started on the Andrea pizza, which is my go-to comfort every time.

Favorite Thing About Practicing International Dispute Resolution in Miami:
My favorite thing is the constant exposure to different cultures. Being in the heart of Latin America’s gateway, Miami offers a unique environment where multiple countries, languages, and legal systems converge. It’s a dynamic setting that fosters meaningful cross-border connections and enriches both the practice and the perspective of international law.

Favorite Book:
The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz is one of those books you should revisit every once in a while. A short but powerful reminder of life’s important perspectives.

Los genios by Jaime Bayly
Highly recommended!
